According to FAO only 1.6% of Somalia’s agricultural land is actively farmed. Poor rains, prolonged droughts and armed conflict have made Somalis increasingly dependent on food imports. Somali Green Initiatives & Technology (SOMGIT), working with farming associations, is training and equipping local farmers to adopt drip irrigation systems and spur local economic growth. Given Somalia’s sparse rainfall and semi-arid landscape, embracing drip irrigation technology provides a great opportunity for the farming community in Balcad to spearhead a
Green Revolution in Somalia and contribute growth and food security.
